Vampire Hunter D is a title that fans of some really old-school anime will recognize. Seriously, this is a really old-school anime. The first anime film came out in its home nation of Japan in 1985, adapting the novels of the same name by Hideyuki Kikuchi into a 80 minute long anime film classic. It would take another seven years for an English language version to reach NA shores in 1992. However, when it did, it instantly became a cult classic in the English-speaking world. Kikuchi’s lavish art designs and gothic horror/science fantasy setting really entranced audiences to the point where they might as well have been under the thrall of the vampire nobles in the setting.
Honestly, it’s a shame that not many people these days are even aware that Vampire Hunter D exists. Thankfully, HIDIVE and Shudder have noticed this, and aim to do something about it. After all, how else do you explain them bringing this anime film classic back to NA shores and back into theaters, and for its 40th anniversary to boot? Don’t believe me? Then why not check out HIDIVE’s official trailer below, and see for yourself if this is the gothic horror vampire anime film for you?
Vampire Hunter D: Theatrical Rerelease Details
HIDIVE and Shudder are proud to announce a partnership with Iconic Events to bring Vampire Hunter D back to NA theaters. This won’t be the version you watched all the way back in 1992 though. HIDIVE and Shudder have worked together to make a digitally remastered version just for this screening.
Vampire Hunter D will return to U.S. and Canadian theaters on April 9, April 10, and April 13, 2025 as part of the next AX Cinema Nights for 2024/2025. In fact, you can purchase advance tickets for it right now from Iconic Events and at participating theater box offices. However, if you don’t have the time for theaters, please note that HIDIVE and Shudder plan to make the anime film available for streaming sometime later this year in 2025. Alas, they don’t give any more specific a release date. We’re just going to have to wait for more info from them at a later time.
