The first online image of Matt Damon as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey has been released. Universal shared the update, revealing that the Oscar-nominated actor will play Odysseus.

In December, Deadline revealed that the director’s latest project would be the adaptation of Homer’s epic poem written around the 8th century BCE. The classic epic follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, on his dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. The original heroes journey sees him facing cyclops, sirens, nymphs, witches, and treacherous seas.

Universal, a long-time Christopher Nolan collaborator and distributor, announced in December that The Odyssey is a “mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new Imax film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to Imax film screens for the first time.”

Matt Damon joins a star-studded cast, which includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Corey Hawkins, Bill Irwin,  Jon Bernthal, and Samantha Morton. No other characters have been announced.

The Odyssey marks Damon’s third collaboration with Christopher Nolan. The Martian actor had a supporting role as Leslie Groves in the seven-time Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and a minor role in 2014’s Interstellar.

Nolan penned the script and serves as director and producer alongside his wife, Emma Thomas. The Odyssey is set to be released on July 17, 2026.
