If you have been following Hollywood news (or rather, scandals), then the name Kang the Conqueror might sound familiar to you. However, this scandal basically has nothing to do with the Marvel supervillain himself. He’s just the kinda-sorta one-off villain for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). Really, the scandal is all about the guy who played him: Jonathan Majors.

Jonathan Majors would normally be a pretty unremarkably famous actor. He gained that fame first for his roles in The Last Black Man in San Francisco and the HBO horror TV series Lovecraft Country. Then he went on to star in other films spanning a variety of genres such as the western The Harder They Fall (2021) and the Korean War war film Devotion (2022). All before finally ending up starring as the supervillain Kang the Conqueror in the aforementioned Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in 2023. Majors’ career in the MCU would continue with him playing other variations of Kang in the Disney+ series Loki.

Then that career came to a screeching halt in March 2023 when Jonathan Majors was arrested for physically assaulting his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. That combined with an assault and harassment conviction led to him being dropped from numerous projects. This includes the MCU and his role as Kang the Conqueror.

It wouldn’t be long after that for the rumor mill to get to work. After all, fans do wonder who will play Kang in future MCU installments. That wondering would lead to rumors that Colman Domingo will be that person. Alas though, Domingo himself is coming out with a pretty clear “No” in that department.

Colman Domingo as Kang: Rumor Denial Details

On the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (as reported by Variety), Colman Domingo reveals that he turned down an offer to replace Jonathan Majors’ role as Kang the Conqueror. According to Domingo, he actually spoke with Marvel executives about this. The reason he had to was precisely because of the storm of rumors surrounding his playing Kang in a future MCU film. Domingo even told the host of the podcast, Josh Horowitz:

“When it was constantly in the press and on places like Twitter, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Is this true? Am I being talked about for Kang? I literally called up my team and said, ‘Are you guys having conversations that I have no idea about?’ And they said no. ‘Are you guys being cagey or what?’ They weren’t.

There had been conversations of me coming into Marvel in some way, so we did follow-up with a sit-down meeting with the heads of Marvel. I did do that. We talked openly about the landscape of Marvel and the Kang rumors. I am all about energy. I want to do things that make sense and bring gentle energy. I want a role to be mine, whatever I develop. Something didn’t feel right to me about replacing someone. I want to build something from the ground up that is my own.”

– Colman Domingo

In the end, Domingo definitively refused the role of Kang of Conqueror. He would rather build up something himself rather than take over someone else’s role. In fact, Marvel is going with replacing Kang with Doctor Doom (played by Robert Downey Jr.) anyways, so there wouldn’t be much point to Kang returning anyways. Still, we shall have to see if Domingo changes his mind at a later date. Preferably from him rather than from rumors.
