Companion stars Jack Quaid (The Boys) as Josh and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) Iris, a couple who are going on a friend’s weekend getaway at a cabin in the woods. The host is the billionaire playboy boyfriend of their friend Kat (Megan Suri). However, their peaceful weekend turns bloody after the billionaire’s death triggers a series of unexpected events for Iris and her friends as they embark on a weekend getaway to his lakeside estate.
Companion is the latest horror thriller that is nothing short of spectacular. Quaid has the endearing charm of his mother, while Thatcher’s mix of vulnerability and fierce “final girl” badassery keeps audiences on their toes. You’re likely aware of Iris’ secret if you’ve caught glimpses of the trailer or poster. But if you haven’t, do yourself a favor and keep it that way—it will enhance the surprises in store. Even if you’ve seen the trailer and are concerned that the plot twists have been spoiled, rest assured they haven’t. Just when I thought I had Companion figured out, something jaw-dropping would unfold.
The film does an impeccable job reimagining a well-known story of love gone awry by turning it into a dynamic adventure that cleverly argues that the real menace lies not in technology itself, but in the toxic individuals who misuse it. While Companion mostly follows Quaid and Thatcher, it is the fantastic ensemble cast that truly captivates. Luke Gage (Smile 2), Harvey Guillén (What We Do In The Shadows), and Megan Suri (Never Have I Ever) each bring their unique flair fully embracing the quirky essence of Hancock’s unconventional break-up film. Their wonderful performances breathe life into the narrative, transforming it into a thrilling exploration of relationships and the dangers posed by those who exploit emotional connections for their own gain.
I truly enjoy when a film can heavy subject matter such as exploring toxic relationships of all levels in an easy and digestible way for the audience.
Make sure to see Companion in theaters beginning January 31, 2025!
