It’s been a great week for filmmaker Robert Eggers, who is making waves with exciting new projects. Hot on the heels of the announcement of Werwulf, his next film with Focus Features, news has surfaced that Eggers has finalized a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth sequel for TriStar Pictures.

It’s not too surprising. This update comes on the heels of the 2025 Oscar nominations, where Eggers’ latest hit Nosferatu garnered four nods, including Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling.

Labyrinth

While details about Eggers’ Labyrinth remain under wraps, sources confirm it will be a sequel to Jim Henson’s beloved 1986 fantasy film, rather than a remake. Eggers is co-writing the script with frequent collaborator Sjón, with whom he previously worked on The Northman. He will also be re-teaming with Sjón for Werwulf. Producing the film are Chris and Eleanor Columbus, alongside Lisa Henson, with Brian Henson stepping in as executive producer.

Efforts to develop a Labyrinth follow-up date back to at least 2017, with Doctor Strange and The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson once attached to helm the project. Eggers’ involvement marks the latest in the long journey to bring a sequel to life.

The original Labyrinth, starred Jennifer Connelly and the late David Bowie. It follows Sarah (Connelly), a teenager tasked with navigating a magical labyrinth to rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King (Bowie).

Though the movie initially underperformed at the box office. It has since gained cult status, with its signature puppetry from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and enduring charm. Over the years, the film’s popularity has fueled tie-in media, video games, and even an annual fan masquerade ball.
