Netflix’s next feature adaptation of R.L. Stine’s Fear Street books will continue to bring the blood and guts. The movie Fear Street: Prom Queen has officially received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association.
This rating aligns with the previous three features in the Fear Street franchise, which all also received an R rating. And although we’ve only been able to see a small glimpse at Prom Queen so far, the movie’s rating offers a little more insight as to what’s in store. Fear Street: Prom Queen has been rated R specifically for “strong bloody violence and gore, teen drug use, language, and some sexual references”.
Here’s the synopsis for Stine’s 1992 book The Prom Queen:
“Welcome back to Shadyside. In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.”
Matt Palmer will direct the film. He’s known for the 2018 thriller Calibre, which also premiered on Netflix. Palmer wrote the screenplay along with Donald McLeary. The feature’s ensemble cast includes India Fowler (The Nevers, Insomnia), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket, The Idol), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls, Above the Shadows), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Cinnamon), Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), Chris Klein (Sweet Magnolias, American Pie), with Lili Taylor (Outer Range, Manhunt), and Katherine Waterston (The End We Start From, Perry Mason).
Fear Street: Prom Queen will premiere on Netflix later in 2025. (The exact date remains unannounced at this time, so check back to THS for more updates.) In the meantime, you can stream the previous Fear Street trilogy on Netflix now.
