Den Of Thieves 2 took the top spot this weekend amongst declining box office returns for returning favorites.

Den Of Thieves 2 Is The Box Office Champ

According to Box Office Mojo, the second weekend of January brought some big shakeups at the box office. Lionsgate’s Den of Thieves 2 debuted at #1 with an estimated $15.5 million. The action-packed sequel managed to fend off some stiff competition; in particular, the film had competition from holdovers like Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Den of Thieves 2 made a solid debut, marking a strong start for the mid-budget action flick. The film’s gritty appeal and the loyal fanbase from the original resonated, making it the top choice for audiences this weekend as we predicted.

Mufasa and Sonic Battle It Out At The Box Office

Sliding into second place was Mufasa: The Lion King, which earned $13.2 million in its fourth weekend. The prequel to Disney’s beloved The Lion King saw a steep 43.7% drop; however, the film continued to draw in families and nostalgia-driven audiences at the box office. This weekend brought its domestic total to a robust $188.8 million.

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 took third place with $11 million. The animated sequel dropped 48.5% from its prior weekend, a fairly typical decline for blockbuster franchises in their fourth frame. With $204.5 million in the bank domestically, Sonic 3 remains a dominant force in the family film landscape.

Horror and Animation Round Out the Top Five

In fourth place, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu continued to captivate horror enthusiasts, earning $6.8 million in its third weekend. The gothic horror film’s chilling visuals and word-of-mouth appeal helped it stand out among the crowded box office lineup, pushing its total gross to $81.8 million.

Meanwhile, Disney’s Moana 2 slipped to fifth place at the box office. As a result, it brought in $6.5 million as it enters its seventh week in theaters. While its performance has slowed, the animated sequel has amassed an impressive $434.9 million domestically. More evidence for the staying power of Disney’s iconic properties.

Next Week’s New Releases

Next week sees the release of Wolf Man and One of Them Days.

There’s no real tracking for either film, but Blumhouse almost always has a January release. Sometimes they’re hits like M3GAN, and other times they’re duds like Night Swim. I have a feeling that Wolf Man will earn around $15 million to $20 million at the box office.

One of Them Days is a comedy, which tend to do well domestically. That said, Sony hasn’t been promoting it much. I see it making $15 million this weekend. It’ll likely fall slightly behind Wolf Man.

As always, we’ll find out next week!
