The upcoming Superman film will be James Gunn’s first experience directing the titular superhero. Not only that, but it will also reboot the entire Superman film series to boot. Well, technically speaking, it will be a re-reboot since Man of Steel already did that in 2013. That film also marked the start of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), so it’s no surprise to hear that this latest film will mark the start of the DC Universe (DCU). It’s pretty clear by now that Warner Bros. are not giving up on the idea of a DC universe in the style of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Meanwhile, the Puppy Bowl is an annual TV program on Animal Planet, showing each year on Super Bowl Sunday. It’s not hard to guess what the program is about. It’s basically a parody of the Super Bowl featuring doggies let loose into a miniature stadium filled with toys in order to play a game that vaguely resembles American football. We even get live commentary from the sidelines. Honestly, it might be even more popular than the actual Super Bowl in some ways. The fact that we’re on Puppy Bowl XXI in 2025 is evidence of that.
So what do Superman and Puppy Bowl XXI have in common with each other? Well normally: not much. This year in 2025 is different though. All thanks to Warner Bros. Discovery, James Gunn, and his faithful dog.
Superman at Puppy Bowl XXI: Details
The Hollywood Reporter has just reported that Warner Bros. Discovery will make a major marketing push for Superman at Puppy Bowl XXI. All meant to promote that upcoming film, as you might expect.
So what is this marketing push, you might ask? Well, we don’t know many details yet. What we do know is that James Gunn himself will make an appearance at Puppy Bowl XXI alongside his adorably faithful dog Ozu. A dog which Gunn and his wife Jennifer Holland actually adopted during the script-writing for Superman. It’s all quite appropriate for Puppy Bowl, since the whole event is designed to raise awareness about adopting pets from shelters and rescuing abandoned animals.
Even more appropriately, James Gunn and Ozu will deliver a “special message” to viewers alongside a sneak peek at Superman. Plus, the winner of Puppy Bowl XXI will even receive the new and highly prestigious “Krypto Super Play” award. What that award will be exactly is still unconfirmed at the moment. But rest assured: it will all be revealed when Puppy Bowl XXI kicks off on February 9, 2025 at 2 PM, with a pre-show at 1 PM.
Tune back in to THS to find out more about DC films and the Super Bowl when we do.
