Warner Bros. has seen some massive turmoil behind the scenes lately with mergers, new executives, and a changing film landscape. They’ve weathered the storm, but not without some controversy. That turmoil continues with a change in scheduling for several of their highest profile releases including The Batman 2. The currently untitled movie from director Alejandro Inarritu and starring Tom Cruise has been moved to October 2nd, 2026 and will be released on IMAX.

That movie has a logline that follows “the most powerful man in the world” who takes on a mission to prove he’s the savior to humanity before it’s too late. Inarritu co-wrote the script alongside Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone. Cruise will star alongside Sandra Huller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed.

That means that the previously 2026-bound The Batman 2 has been bumped to 2027. It was previously set for that October 2026 release in IMAX, but will now see a year-long delay. The sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman was announced at CinemaCon in 2022, it should see both Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves reunite for the project.

What About 2025 And What Does This Mean For The Batman 2?

Two 2025 releases in Mickey 17 and the vampire-action film Sinners have swapped release dates. Mickey 17 takes over theaters on March 7th, 2025 and Sinners will now move to April 18th, 2025. The move is so that Mickey 17 can be on IMAX screens for longer. It also means that Sinners has a bit more time to get worked on in post-production. The movie was shot on film, which means that there are less labs that can work on the project.

Mickey 17 has seen its share of delays, but the project follows an employee who is asked to give the ultimate commitment to his job: to die for a living. The film stars Robert Pattinson as he plays various clones of himself, when one (or more) break away and try to live for a change. It also stars Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.

Sinners is from Ryan Coogler and stars Michael B. Jordan alongside Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo. It follows twin brothers who return to their hometown to start over again but realize that a greater evil is waiting for them.

The Batman 2 getting delayed for another year is a blow, for sure. Fans have been clamoring for more from that universe of Batman, while DC Studios own mainline universe is kicking off in 2025 with Superman. There’s really nothing we can do but hope that the delays mean that we’re getting the best possible script and everything else for the film.
