The first building block for the DC Universe isn’t Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, or even The Flash. It’s a bunch of losers named Creature Commandos. Max has picked up the James Gunn-written series for a second season midway through the show’s seven-episode first season. It premiered on Max on December 5th.
The continuity of the DC Universe will continue when Superman hits theaters next year. DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation produce the show with Dean Lorey as showrunner. Here’s what Gunn and Peter Safran co-chairmen of DC Studios had to say.
“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem. From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing run of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. Thank you, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”
Creature Commandos follows a team of incarcerated monsters that take on missions the Suicide Squad wouldn’t even touch. The voice cast features Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoe Chao, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma and Viola Davis, who reprises her role as Amanda Waller from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.
James Gunn wrote all seven episodes of the first season of the show. He’s also directing and wrote the upcoming Superman film for DC Studios.
Our Take On Creature Commandos Getting A Second Season
It’s excellent news for fans of DC that the show is getting a second season. The DC misfits laid the groundwork for what we can expect out of the new era of the comic/media company. The show features several hallmarks of James Gunn’s filmmaking style, but it also proves that there’s room for more than just squeaky clean PG-13 programming. The show is violent, has adult themes, but also tugs at your heartstrings learning about how these misfits came to be. Here’s what I had to say in my review of Creature Commandos.
If you’re wondering about DC holding back some of the more unsavory portions of these characters, it doesn’t. G.I. Robot in particular gets a stunning backstory about his time in WW2 and the time after that he spends before he gets to the team. The story of The Bride is also tragic, reminiscent of how women are treated in marriages that they don’t want. Overall, it’s a successful story for the characters that will just make you love these “losers” even more.
It might not be Superman, but Creature Commandos kicks off the new era of DC in a way that’s violent, bombastic, and sets the tone for what to expect in the future.
You can watch Creature Commandos on Max right now.
