Get ready for another Mummy movie from New Line and Blumhouse. Lee Cronin is writing and directing a new take on the horror cliche revolving around an undead mummy. It was previously reported that the movie was an untitled mystery project, but it’s now set for an April 17th, 2026 release.
Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are producing alongside Cronin’s production company Doppelgangers.
There aren’t any plot details currently but according to sources, Cronin is looking to bring a modern take to a classic evil. Here’s what Cronin said in a statement.
“This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,”
Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are co-financing the film. Producing are James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville. Executive producing are Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Macdara Kelleher. Alayna Glasthal is the executive overseeing the project for Atomic Monster.
Who Is Lee Cronin? And Why Isn’t This From Universal?
Lee Cronin directe the stellar Evil Dead Rise, which was one of the best horror flicks of 2023. He teamed with New Line Cinema for that movie, so the relationship is here for his version of The Mummy. That movie grossed nearly $150 million worldwide on a much smaller budget. He has a first look deal with New Line.
Now the question remains, why isn’t this from Universal? Well, Universal might own copyright on some of its most famous monsters, but they don’t own the copyright to a mummy monster. It’s free for other studios to make movies about. The original The Mummy came out in the 30s and then went to movies starring Brendan Fraser and Tom Cruise. Hammer Films did its own version of The Mummy in 1959 that starred Christopher Lee.
Blumhouse and Lee Cronin confirmed this news in a post to Instagram.
