Paramount has wasted no time in greenlighting a fourth entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie series. Variety is reporting that they’ve greenlit Sonic 4 for a Spring 2027 release. This comes on the heels of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 coming out in theaters on December 20th, 2024. The film is tracking for a $55 million to $60 million gross in its first week going head to head with Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King.
Internationally the film is opening in 52 markets on Christmas. Critics, like our own Jeff Ewing, have given the movie positive scores. The first two films have been massive hits for Paramount, grossing a combined $725 million and another $180 million in global home entertainment rentals and digital purchases. It also inspired the Paramount+ spinoff series Knuckles, which came out earlier this year.
Jeff Fowler has directed all three Sonic films with stars Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, James Marsden, Colleen O’Shaghnessey, and Keanu Reeves. There’s no word on if he’ll return to the director’s chair for the fourth film. As for any plot details, those are also under wraps for a fourth film.
What We Think About Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Getting Greenlit
For fans of the Sonic movies, this is great news. They’ve been a breath of fresh air and have really helped kick off this new wave of Hollywood adaptations of famous video games. The first film did start off rocky with the horrific design of Sonic, but after that it’s been smooth sailing ever since. It’s really the best situation that fans of the blue blur can hope for. The writing and performances in the films have been great, both fully knowing that they’re in a Sonic movie, but also with emotional resonance.
