By the time you reach DAN DA DAN Ep. 10 “Have You Ever Seen a Cattle Mutilation?”, you’re already getting the feeling that the anime likes doing emotional gut punches in between the action, comedy, and horror. This one now features a pitiful alien, and the reason why he wants money so much. As it turns out, a cattle mutilation can be a weirdly heartfelt thing.

Thus, here’s the official synopsis from Crunchyroll instead of a spoiler-filled plot summary. You can check out that synopsis below:

Now that’s some HD UFO on cow action there.

As you might have guessed, it’s definitely the story that’s the star of DAN DA DAN Ep. 10 “Have You Ever Seen a Cattle Mutilation?”. All because it delivers as much of an emotional gut punch as the episode detailing Acrobatic Silky’s backstory. All centering around a dairy cow “mutilation”, no less. Although, it’s more of a cow abduction, and it’s one that the main characters approved of. You’ll see what I mean.

This is something I’ve been noticing about Yukinobu Tatsu’s storytelling style. He likes following up action and horror scenes with emotionally heartfelt gut punches to your soul. That, and delicious meals. I’ve noticed that yummy food tends to follow the action, which results in some delicious cooldown scenes.

Speaking of which: those scenes wouldn’t be nearly as good without the efforts of animation studio Science SARU. Their animators once again deliver some stellar animation quality. In particular, the scene near the end of this episode with the cow abduction and flying saucer is one I want to give kudos for. No spoilers, but it’s both hilarious and heartwarming that Tatsu turned an alien abduction story on its head like that.

Alas, what could’ve been if not for Disney.

Alas, my sole complaint with DAN DA DAN Ep. 10 “Have You Ever Seen a Cattle Mutilation?” has to do with a bizarre editing choice on the part of Science SARU. As you can see above, Mr. Mantis Shrimp’s starship was originally meant to strongly resemble a certain Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. This would’ve been an amazing pop culture reference for all the Star Wars fans out there. Instead, his ship was changed to some generic flying saucer.

Science SARU gives no official explanation for the change. However, and this is pure speculation: my guess is that Disney demanded an arm and a leg to allow the pop culture reference, and the animation studio wasn’t willing or wasn’t able to pay the royalties. At least, not without compromising other aspects of the anime’s production. So sadly, it’s likely Disney’s greed that resulted in us not getting that Star Wars reference. A pity there.

And as you might expect, this is not an action-packed episode. It’s more on the heartfelt and emotional side than it is action-y. If you want that instead, then might I suggest watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaSolo LevelingKaiju No. 8, and/or DDDD? Those anime series should have enough action to tide you over until the next time DAN DA DAN goes into its action-packed phase.
