DAN DA DAN Ep. 8 “I’ve Got This Funny Feeling” is the eighth episode (you can read my reviews for Ep. 1-3, Ep. 4, Ep. 5, Ep. 6, and Ep. 7 here) of the first season of this action, romantic comedy, and supernatural thriller shonen anime series. Said anime series is the anime adaptation of the Shonen Jump manga of the same name by Yukinobu Tatsu. Science SARU (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Star Wars: Visions, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) is the animation studio behind this anime.

Production Cast

Hiroshi Nishikori is the director and storyboarder behind DAN DA DAN Ep. 8 “I’ve Got This Funny Feeling”. As for the DAN DA DAN anime as a whole: Fuga Yamashiro is the director, with Hiroshi Seko is responsible for series composition and screenplay, and kensuke ushio composing the music. Naoyuki Onda is responsible for character design, while Yoshimichi Kameda is responsible for alien and monster design. Satoshi Hashimoto is responsible for color design, while Junichi Higashi is responsible for art direction. Kazuto Izumita is the cinematographer, while Kiyoshi Hirose is the editor, and Eriko Kimura is the sound director.

As for the music: the opening theme song of this anime is “Otonoke” by Creepy Nuts. Meanwhile, “TAIDADA” by ZUTOMAYO is the ending theme song.

Voice Cast

DAN DA DAN Ep. 8 “I’ve Got This Funny Feeling” features the voices of Shion Wakayama (Abby Trott in English dub) as Momo Ayase, Natsuki Hanae (A.J. Beckles in English dub) as Okarun, and Ayane Sakura (Lisa Reimold in English dub) as Aira Shiratori. Other notable voices in this episode include Mayumi Tanaka (Barbara Goodson in English dub) as Turbo Granny and Nana Mizuki (Kari Wahlgren in English dub) as Seiko Ayase.

On the antagonists’ side, we have Kazuya Nakai (Ben Diskin in English dub) as the Serpoians.

Alas, DAN DA DAN only recently made its debut. In fact, DAN DA DAN Ep. 8 “I’ve Got This Funny Feeling” only just made its debut yesterday as of this writing. Thus, here’s the official synopsis from Crunchyroll instead of a spoiler-filled plot summary. You can check out that synopsis below:

The battle against Acrobatic Silky is over, Aira harbors romantic feelings stemming from how Okarun had saved her. As Momo, Okarun, and Aira’s feelings intertwine, Serpoians make another appearance, and the three of them are trapped in void space.

DAN DA DAN Ep. 8 “I’ve Got This Funny Feeling”: The Good

The context behind this scene makes it even funnier than it already is.

Weirdly enough, the story of DAN DA DAN Ep. 8 “I’ve Got This Funny Feeling” is the best part about it. All in spite of how conventional some of the plot is. Yes, the love triangle plotline is one of the oldest romance tropes in history, and Yukinobu Tatsu follows that trope to a T in this episode. However, all tropes are tools in the end. This time, the tool is used surprisingly well. Mostly, it’s due to the humor, but there are bits of heartfelt drama in this love triangle. It’s this mix of comedy and drama as well as the skill with which both are used that’s what keeps this love triangle interesting.

Of course, the other thing keeping the love triangle interesting is the supernatural horror action in the latter half of the episode. Much of it is thanks to the superb animation from Science SARU, who provides some of the zaniest action sequences in anime-dom. This is what makes the action in this anime so entertaining to watch, including this episode. Of particular note in this episode are Aira and the Shin Godzilla reference. Trust me, you will know it when you see it.

On a side note, I’m still on the fence about this, but this episode shows that DAN DA DAN is an equal opportunity clothes destroyer. No, I will not elaborate on what that means. Both for spoiler reasons and others. You will just have to see when you watch this episode for yourself.

DAN DA DAN Ep. 8 “I’ve Got This Funny Feeling”: The Bad

Bad to the bone, but in a good way.

Honestly, the only bad thing about DAN DA DAN Ep. 8 “I’ve Got This Funny Feeling” will be for those who want some blood and gore in their action. Because this episode has neither, although it does have a good deal of body horror to compensate. If that’s not enough for you, then might I suggest watching  Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, Kaiju No. 8, and/or DDDD. Those anime have more than enough blood and gore to satisfy any action junkie of that particular stripe.
