Spy x Family Ch. 105.1 / Short Mission 14 is another little mini-chapter as Tatsuya Endo takes another break from a main chapter. As per usual for these short missions, the story is just adorable. It’s basically Anya and Becky going to the movies, and doing their best impression of Mystery Science Theater 3000 while they’re at it.

Spy x Family Ch. 105.1 (known officially as Short Mission 14) is the 14th short chapter of the action spy comedy manga by Tatsuya Endo (Blade of the Moon PrincessTISTA). As you might expect from previous short chapters, this one doesn’t continue the story of the previous chapter in the slightest. We will need to wait for later to see what other wacky hijinks Franky gets up to next.

Casey Loe returns as the translator for Ch. 105.1, with Rina Mapa returning as the letterer. Shueisha originally published this manga in Japan under their Jump Comics+ imprint in the magazine Shōnen Jump+Viz Media is the company publishing this manga in English in the NA region.

When and Where to Read

Spy x Family Ch. 105.1 made its online debut on September 29, 2024. You can read this chapter entirely for free on Shonen Jump on Viz Media. Ch. 105.1 will remain free for two chapter releases after it. Upon the release of the third chapter after it, Ch. 105.1 will go into the Shonen Jump vault. Once there, you will have to pay a subscription fee to read it and all previous chapters. Admittedly, the fee is only $2.99 per month, so it’s not that big a hit to your wallet. All the same, if you’re short on cash, then you might want to hurry up and read Ch. 105.1 for free before you can’t anymore.

Anime Adaptation Details

As a side note: Spy x Family now has an anime adaptation that premiered on April 9, 2022. In fact, season 2 just recently premiered on October 7, 2023, and even more recently ended on December 23, 2023. There was even an anime film spinoff called Spy x Family Code: White that premiered in Japan December 22, 2023; and will finally make its NA debut on April 19, 2024. You can watch all episodes on either Crunchyroll or Hulu. Note, though, that only Crunchyroll has any of the dubs. So if you like watching the English dub for some reason, then you have to watch the anime on Crunchyroll.

If you want to purchase tickets for that Spy x Family Code: White anime film though, then you can do so from its official website. Note though that Spy x Family Code: White is now streaming on Crunchyroll, so you don’t have to head to theaters if you don’t want to.

Spy x Family Ch. 105.1 / Short Mission 14: Plot Summary

There’s something hilarious about Becky just barging into the Forger home, and everyone treats this as normal.

Spy x Family Ch. 105.1 begins the short chapter with Becky barging into the Forger house as if she owns the place. Fortunately, Anya and the other Forgers don’t mind this. In fact, Anya is ecstatic about it because Becky wants to take her out to see a movie. Alas, it turns out to be a pure romance movie, which quickly loses Anya’s interest. Becky only regains Anya’s interest with a casual mention of Damian and how the movie could help her chances with him. Seeing the value to world peace, Anya changes her mind and agrees to the trip, with Yor and Martha as their chaperones.

The screening goes…about as well as you’d expect. Becky is entraced by the “adult” romance, while Anya busies her self by munching on the popcorn and even falling asleep by the time of the movie’s climax. All with Martha and Yor being slightly disturbed and shocked respectively by all the kissing. By the time they all go home, all Anya can think about is how tasty the popcorn is. I believe this counts as a mission failure for Becky, compounded by Anya, Martha, and Yor all agreeing that they would rather be the protector rather than the protected. Ah, what’s a Becky going to do? Oh well, maybe Becky will change her mind in a future chapter of Spy x Family.

Popcorn is clearly the only thing that matters for Anya.

Despite how short it is, it’s definitely the story of Spy x Family Ch. 105.1 that’s the most interesting part about it. All because of the clash of different aspects of feminism here, surprisingly enough. You have Becky who basically wants to be the traditional woman who wants to be protected, who is then countered by Anya, Martha, and Yor; who all want to be in the traditioinally male role as the protector. Honestly, the fact that Becky is considerably outnumbered here shows just how feminism is evolving in the setting. It does make me hope that Becky will change her mind later at some point, or perhaps her own ideals will change over time as she grows up? Well, we will just have to see what Tatsuya Endo has in store for them all later.

Speaking of which: Endo’s artwork here is also why this chapter is so delicious. Again, despite how short it is. I have to give a shoutout to Anya’s facial expressions here. Endo has always been good with facial expressions, but there’s something about Anya’s wide eyes that just brings a smile to my face. That, and the massive snot bubble and line of drool as she snores her way past the movie’s climax.

You can tell how each one’s reaction is completely in-character.

Honestly, my one and only complaint is that Spy x Family Ch. 105.1 is so short. It’s really no surprise there. It is a Short Mission, after all. It even perfectly fits the manga due to its episodic nature. I’m also mollified by the fact that Endo is finally taking a break, since writing and drawing this manga takes up a lot of energy. I’d rather see him continue Spy x Family for a very long time, so this is a very minor complaint from me about the chapter length.

Of course, if you’re not a fan of slice of life, then this Short Mission is definitely not for you. There’s not a scrap of action to be had here. If you want that, then might I suggest watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no YaibaSolo LevelingKaiju No. 8DDDD, and/or DAN DA DAN? Those anime series should have more than enough action to satisfy any action junkie.

Tune back in to THS to find out more about Spy x Family and other manga and anime series when we do.
