“Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios” (The Clash of Empires) is a new reimagining of the caped crusader, Batman. Throughout his 85 years history we have seen how the Dark Knight has transformed into several different personas depending on the creative team. Sometimes he has taken on a lighter tone, while others have been dark and gritty. He has also traversed through different time periods like a steampunk era in the late 1800s or in the futuristic world of “Batman Beyond”.

Now in “Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios”, we see the Dark Knight in Mesoamerica during the 1500s. When the Aztec empire was flourishing. One major difference in this version of the character is that it’s not Bruce Wayne. Rather a whole new character taking on the mantle. Batman as well as the rest of the characters will be ingrained in Mexican culture with an alternate take on the Spanish Conquest. This animated film is being made in Mexico, by Mexican animators.

A CHAT WITH THE CREATORS OF BATMAN AZTECA CHOQUE DE IMPERIOS

As we anxiously await the release of “Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios”, I caught up with Juan Meza-León and José C. García de Letona at this year’s New York Comic Con. Meza-León is the director, and Letona is the producer on the animated film.

We spoke about the importance of the film for the Mexican animators. As well as why Batman has been able to go through so many different versions. They talk about some of their inspirations and research that went into developing the characters and what it meant to them to get to work on this project. It’s a fun conversation that you can check out above!
