When you think about rom-coms, you don’t necessarily equate heartbreaking. Nevertheless, several of my favorite films belong to this unique subgenre. Some of my favorites, for example, are Hope Floats, The Fault In Our Stars, and A Walk To Remember. All of which are poignant, memorable, and heartbreaking. We Live In Time similarly combines humor and an emotional rollercoaster presented in a non-linear fashion.

Florence Pugh (Oppenheimer) and Andrew Garfield (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) play Almut and Tobias. A married couple on one of the worst days of their lives. They receive the devastating news that Almut’s cancer has returned and she has a choice to make. Does she go through the next year hoping for remission, or to live her life to the fullest until she has to say goodbye to her family? Throughout the film, the narrative jumps around in time (hence the title, We Live In Time) showing the viewer how the two met, the rocky start, as well as the milestones of their marriage and the birth of their child.

Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield are Fantastic Together in We Live In Time

Pugh and Garfield are excellent together and give some of their best performances to date. The two are both so incredibly vulnerable and open as these characters. I found it truly captivating to witness the evolution of their relationship, as they navigate the complexities of love and the unexpected challenges that arise along the way.

Typically, I don’t mind when a story is told out of order (non-linear). However, with We Live In Time I found myself distracted trying to figure out where in time we were in the story. The transitions were executed subtly, primarily through changes in Pugh’s hairstyle. I also found the storytelling device to take away from the impact of the end of the film. I left the theater with dry eyes after expecting to be destroyed. In the end, it felt like a disserves to the work Pugh and Garfield had done to make audiences connect with them.
