While Venom: The Last Dance has had a slow start at the domestic box office; it’s not all doom and gloom for the symbiotic duo.

Venom: The Last Dance: Waltzes To Number One

Venom: The Last Dance was predictably number one at the box office as per Box Office Mojo. However, there’s a lot to unpack.

The film opened to $51 million which is the lowest of the franchise. Venom opened to $80 million in 2018, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage opened to $90 million. Which was a record for a post-pandemic movie at the time.

Overall, the box office is struggling, so the diminished value may not entirely be the movie’s fault. Still, the movie is enjoying a huge presence overseas, earning $124 million. So, while domestic audiences may not be seeing the film in droves, it’s doing quite well internationally.

The Rest Of The Box Office

Smile 2 dropped from first place to second; the movie earned $9.4 million. The Wild Robot dropped from second to third, earning $6.5 million.

Conclave opened to $6.5 million as well in the fourth place spot. The drama focused on the Vatican electing a new Pope; came off a strong showing at both the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF). The chances are high for the film to get some awards recognition; and so the crowds are buzzing to see the film.

Finally, We Live in Time, stayed in fifth with $4.8 million.

Next Weekend’s Predictions

Next weekend sees the release of Here and Juror No. 2.

Here reunites Robert Zemeckis with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright 30 years after Forrest Gump. The movie may have some talent behind it, but it’s only tracking for an $11 million to $16 million opening. While it’s being modestly promoted, it’ll likely land closer to $13 million.

Juror No. 2 is a baffling case. First off, the movie hasn’t been promoted well. Then you have Clint Eastwood not attending the premiere, which, as he is 94 years old that’s totally understandable; but doesn’t help the promotion of the film. Then, of course, there’s the recent news that Warner Bros won’t be reporting any box office numbers for the film. This isn’t entirely uncommon; but coupled with everything else, it certainly seems like the studio is ready to move on from the film. I can see it making anywhere from $5 million to $7 million; but without reported numbers, it’s going to be hard to confirm.

As always, we’ll find out next week!
