“Exhibiting Forgiveness” is now playing in theaters. It’s a letter to the filmmaker’s son about his upbringing and why some things are the way they are in their family.
A CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST
With the release of “Exhibiting Forgiveness”, I spoke with Titus Kaphar. He is the writer and director of the film, as well as the inspiration behind the characters. We spoke about how his life inspired the story and wanting to tell his son about it blossomed in this film. As well as the amount of work that the cast put into the film, leading to emotional moments on set. Kaphar also shared with me how his work as a painter helped in creating more show-not-tell moments in the film that I enjoyed very much. It was a great conversation that you can check out below!
MORE ABOUT “EXHIBITING FORGIVENESS”
Tarrell (Holland) is an admired American painter who lives with his wife, singer Aisha (Day), and their young son, Jermaine. Tarrell’s artwork excavates beauty from the anguish of his youth, keeping past wounds at bay. His path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, La’Ron (Jelks), a conscience-stricken man desperate to reconcile.
Tarrell’s mother, Joyce (Ellis-Taylor), a pious woman with a profound and joyful spirituality, hopes that Tarrell can open his heart to forgiveness, giving them all another chance at being a family. In this raw and deeply moving film, Tarrell and La’Ron learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving.
