It’s not an exaggeration to say the The Goonies is perhaps one of the most famous movies in history. Even when it first made its original theatrical debut on June 7, 1985; it received some very positive reception. Even in the present day, Rotten Tomatoes shows that critics are giving it 77% over 64 reviews, with audiences being even more generous by giving it 91% over a staggering 250,000+ ratings. That’s how you know this film from director Richard Donner and screenplay writer Chris Columbus (based on a story by Steven Spielberg) has become a cult classic in modern times.

It’s this cult classic status that’s why The Goonies is one of the most popular films out there to add to your bucket list. It’s also why the titular Goonies’ hometown of Astoria, Oregon has become quite the tourist spot. Thus, you can also understand why the 40th anniversary of that film is happening at Astoria: the port town where it all began.

In fact, the whole town will transform into an All-Goonies-All-Weekend Celebration just for the occasion. Complete with the celebration benefiting the Oregon Film Museum expansion project to boot.
