The Strangers trilogy was a wild idea to start off with. It was a bit of mastery from Renny Harlin to convince a studio to give him the money and time to flim a trilogy of horror movies back-to-back-to-back, and after the first film came out earlier this year, we now have the second part releasing sometime next year. Here’s the first teaser trailer for reference.
Lionsgate took on a gamble, even with the smaller price tag of the trilogy in comparison to other movies releasing this year. The first Strangers film is a horror classic, so the idea of expanding upon that with looks into what made The Strangers what they are, is another gamble. Horror villains are sometimes the scariest when we don’t know a thing about them. Hell, the entire premise of The Strangers is scary because of their reasoning.
“You were home.”
Fans of the original have latched onto these characters between that film and the sequel The Strangers: Prey At Night. There’s mythology surrounding them and the masks they pick. Renny Harlin’s trilogy is looking to expand on that. The first film The Strangers: Chapter One was basically a bit of a retread of the first film minus the awkward marriage proposals. It starred Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, and Ryan Bown. This second film still stars Petsch and also includes Gabriel Basso and Ema Horvath. The synopsis is about as simple and unspecific as it comes.
The chilling next chapter of The Strangers franchise.
The new trailer at least seems like they’re separating themselves from the very first movie. Maya is in the hospital and breaks out, picked up by seemingly nice strangers. And Strangers, they are.
So Is It Too Little Too Late?
It’s the cop out answer, but we’ll have to see when the second Chapter releases. The Strangers: Chapter One divided fans and it’s up to this second part to set itself from the rest of the series. Some fans want to see the origins of these characters, and some do not. It’s a tall task to please everyone, but at the end of the day, the best thing that Renny Harlin and Co. can do is make an entertaining and frightening movie. This new trailer shows more promise on that front, so we’ll have to see.
So, what did you think of the newest The Strangers movie? Are you excited for the second chapter?
