Kraven the Hunter (aka. Sergei Nikolaevich Kravinoff) is a rather odd choice to make a superhero film out of. Mostly because he originally wasn’t a superhero at all. His original comic book version was actually a supervillain, and one of Spider-Man’s deadliest adversaries to boot. All because he wanted to put Spider-Man’s head on a wall as a trophy to prove himself the greatest hunter in the world. You would think that there are better and less illegal game to hunt, but well, who knows what this guy is thinking?

Hence, it’s very likely that Sony’s take on Kraven the Hunter will be an antihero at best. In fact, this upcoming film has a R-rating already. Perhaps this darker take of a superhero is what the genre needs. Sony certainly thinks so. Why else would they feature that film at this year’s New York Comic Con (NYCC)?

Complete with the title on the big screen as well.

On Friday, October 18, 2024 at NYCC 2024, Sony unveiled their upcoming Kraven the Hunter superhero film during their hour-long panel late in the evening. The panel’s main feature was actually a clip of actual footage from the film, taken from the opening when the titular Kraven arrives at a prison colony. Not only that, but the panel also featured the appearances of not only director J.C. Chandor, but also the star of the show himself: Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

The master hunter himself in the flesh.

In fact, Johnson himself has quite a few words to say about Kraven the Hunter. Not least of which because he’s playing the man himself. You can check out his words below:

It’s always interesting playing a villain, and I think it comes with a lot more depth and complexity. He’s real. He’s not an alien, he’s not a visual VFX monster. He’s a man who’s made a choice to be a hunter, a killer. I think that comes with a lot of layers. Kraven is a hunter, not a poacher and as every great hunter knows, sometimes you have to cull the herd to preserve the order. Once you start applying that to human beings, that’s when it becomes a pretty dark story.
