Prince Charming is a very, very old stock character for fairy tales. Far older than Disney, really. In fact, the first vaguest mention of the character appeared in Charles Perrault’s version of “Sleeping Beauty” all the way back in 1697: about 204 years before Walt Disney was even born. Nevertheless, Disney did play a very major role in popularizing this stock character. Starting with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs back in 1937, Disney has had a lot of fun with this character archetype. From straight portrayals to villainous depictions to even comedic parodies: Disney has done it all with this character.
Now though, it seems like Disney wants to do another story revolving around the Prince Charming stock character: an origin story. With the archetype’s name right there in the title to boot. Plus, they even now have a director for that upcoming prequel film. Ever heard of Paul King?
Prince Charming: Paul King Details
Deadline has just reported that Paul King will be directing the Prince Charming film for Disney, with Simon Barnaby and Jon Croker co-writing along with King. Honestly, it’s because King is the director that you can tell that this prequel film is going to go one of two ways. It’s either going to be wholesomely adorable or bizarrely entertaining. Why do I think this? Well, it’s because King also directed Paddington (2014) and Wonka (2023). Heck, it could be entirely possible that he could go both ways here. Why not?
Aside from that though, there’s very little information about this Prince Charming film. We don’t even have the vaguest idea of when we’ll see this film, or even if it will be live-action or animated. The only thing we may know for certain is from Deadline: who mentions that insiders reported that this film “will not be specifically linked to Cinderella“. Alas, that’s it for now. We’ll just have to wait for Disney to give us more info about this film later.
Tune back in to THS to find out more about Prince Charming and other Disney films when we do.
