Spy x Family Ch. 104 / Mission 104 is the rare chapter featuring Damian Desmond and his two friends for once. Basically: the whole chapter is them having a grand day out in the wilds. It’s as silly a day out as you can expect for three very rich little boys and their butlers to have.
Spy x Family Ch. 104 / Mission 104: Details
Spy x Family Ch. 104 / Mission 104 is the 104th chapter of the action spy comedy manga by Tatsuya Endo (Blade of the Moon Princess, TISTA). However, this chapter does not continue the story of the previous chapter. In fact, Anya and the Forgers don’t even appear at all in this chapter.
Casey Loe returns as the translator for Ch. 104, with Rina Mapa returning as the letterer. Shueisha originally published this manga in Japan under their Jump Comics+ imprint in the magazine Shōnen Jump+. Viz Media is the company publishing this manga in English in the NA region.
When and Where to Read
Spy x Family Ch. 104 made its online debut on September 1, 2024. You can read this chapter entirely for free on Shonen Jump on Viz Media. Ch. 104 will remain free for two chapter releases after it. Upon the release of the third chapter after it, Ch. 104 will go into the Shonen Jump vault. Once there, you will have to pay a subscription fee to read it and all previous chapters. Admittedly, the fee is only $2.99 per month, so it’s not that big a hit to your wallet. All the same, if you’re short on cash, then you might want to hurry up and read Ch. 104 for free before you can’t anymore.
Anime Adaptation Details
As a side note: Spy x Family now has an anime adaptation that premiered on April 9, 2022. In fact, season 2 just recently premiered on October 7, 2023, and even more recently ended on December 23, 2023. There was even an anime film spinoff called Spy x Family Code: White that premiered in Japan December 22, 2023; and will finally make its NA debut on April 19, 2024. You can watch all episodes on either Crunchyroll or Hulu. Note, though, that only Crunchyroll has any of the dubs. So if you like watching the English dub for some reason, then you have to watch the anime on Crunchyroll.
If you want to purchase tickets for that Spy x Family Code: White anime film though, then you can do so from its official website. Note though that Spy x Family Code: White is now streaming on Crunchyroll, so you don’t have to head to theaters if you don’t want to.
Spy x Family Ch. 104 / Mission 104: Plot Summary
Spy x Family Ch. 104 starts off with Damian trying to diligently study ancient Ostanian history at the local library, while his two friends are not-so-diligently bored out of their little minds. Then the local librarian mentions that someone earned a Stella from finding ancient ruins, and suddenly Damian and his friends are all up for some field studying in the form of a treasure hunting expedition with their personal butlers in tow.
Alas, their expedition does not go well. Between the hot weather, mountain climbing, venomous serpents, and tarantula that just wanted to say “Hi!” to Damian on his shoulder; their treasure-hunting luck is at an all-time low. Alas, the only thing they get out of it is a delicious dinner of wild greens and deer meat, courtesy of their butlers who also double as chefs. Oh, and some photos of a massive fictional flower seemingly inspired by the Rafflesia and the titan arum. At the very least, it was a nice camping trip for all of them as they head back to their luxurious homes via helicopter. Even complete with some bit of new lore about Damian’s relationship with his mother. All in all, it was a nice and fun chapter of Spy x Family to relax to.
Spy x Family Ch. 104 / Mission 104: The Good
Honestly, the story of Spy x Family Ch. 104 is the best part of it, as is the case with the manga as a whole. Despite what Tatusya Endo has claimed about his manga, it’s pretty clear that he enjoys writing it. Otherwise, these silly little side stories wouldn’t be nearly as common. In fact, it’s side stories like this one featuring Damian and his two friends that’s why I love this manga. They may not contribute anything to the main story whatsoever, but they help flesh out the side characters into something more than mere side characters. Even then, that thing about the ancient civilization of Ostania could very well be a teaser to the main plot. It just feels like foreshadowing to me, which if it bears fruit, will make this a most fascinating side chapter indeed.
Making that story great is the artwork, also from Tatsuya Endo. He’s always had a knack for drawing facial expressions, and the ones in this chapter are just hilariously ridiculous. My favorite has to be Damian’s faces when that spider tried to greet him. It was just too precious to not burst out into laughter when you see it.
Spy x Family Ch. 104 / Mission 104: The Bad
Alas, if you don’t like meandering plotline in a manga, then Spy x Family Ch. 104 is probably not for you. This kind of story is here for the long haul, so there’s plenty of room for fun, non-plot-related chapters like this. It’s also not really what one would call a typical shonen action story. It’s just pure comedy here, with some room for feels in the middle and at the end. If you want action like an adrenaline junkie, then might I suggest watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, Kaiju No. 8, DDDD, and/or DAN DA DAN?
