After seven years away, Rob Liefeld will return to Youngblood. In partnership with Image Comics, Liefeld will help create new media and merch for the comics franchise in 2025.
After Liefeld’s high-profile work at Marvel Comics – where he created characters like Deadpool and Cable – he teamed with Scott Mitchell Rosenberg to launch Image Comics in 1992. Youngblood, the company’s first comic series, smashed sales records. It became the first independent, non-Marvel or DC comic title to chart at #1 and sell over a million copies.
“As our company’s very first comic, Youngblood set the course not just for Image Comics, but for creator-owned comics, so we couldn’t be more thrilled that Rob is returning to his signature creation,” said Image Comics Publisher and CCO Eric Stephenson. “Rob’s vision for these characters and this concept is what originally attracted me to Image Comics way back in the 1990s, so it’s especially exciting that the series that started it all is finally coming home!”
To date, the original Youngblood miniseries has sold over 25 million copies worldwide. The series now spans over 100 issues. In addition to Liefeld himself, top talent in comics such as Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead) Alan Moore (Watchmen, Supreme), and Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, The Kingsmen) have contributed to Youngblood.
Liefeld expressed his excitement to get involved with Youngblood again.
“It’s so great that I can run into the comfort of characters that I created, that launched a movement. They carry such history. I love Youngblood so much. These characters are my absolute passion.”
Liefeld will help create new Youngblood media and merchandise, starting with a brand-new title written and illustrated by Liefeld himself. This will launch in 2025. Image Comics has a number of other projects planned with the comics creator, including a Youngblood Vault Edition (an oversize hardcover with hi-res scans of the original art from the first Youngblood series), as well as a Facsimile Edition of Youngblood #1 to mark the title’s 33rd anniversary in April 2025.
Plus, Liefeld and Image Comics have more planned for Youngblood that’s yet to be announced. So, check back to THS for more updates.
