According to a report by Deadline, Kurt Sutter has left his Netflix series, The Abandons. The series was nearing the end of its production and was set to wrap in a few weeks. The exit of Sutter so close to completion is certainly a shock. Although this is not the first time Sutter has left, or been forced out, of one of his projects. Production is expected to continue and will now be run by executive producer/director Otto Bathurst and co-exec producer Rob Askins.

ABOUT THE ABANDONS

The Abandons is set in 1850s Oregon and follows a group of diverse outlier families in their pursuit of Manifest Destiny. The series explores the corrupt force of wealth and power that covets their land and attempts to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land.

SUTTER EXITS THE ABANDONS

It is being reported that Sutter’s departure was due to creative differences between the Sons of Anarchy creator and the streamer. Netflix was concerned with the first episode clocking in at 1 hour and 40 minutes. Sutter was unable to condense the episode so it was split into two requiring additional filming to take place. According to the report, those scenes have been written but not yet filmed.

This is the second time Sutter has had a contentious relationship with studio executives. He was previously fired from his series, Mayans M.C. back in 2019. This followed an investigation into complaints by writers, cast, and crew on the series about the working environment. Sutter pointed the blame towards the “creative scrutiny of Disney” that led to conflict as he “pushed back”.

At this time, both Sutter and Netflix have declined to comment, but as more information is released we will be sure to cover it here at That Hashtag Show.
