Professional wrestler Maxwell Jacob Friedman, MJF, of AEW has joined the cast of the upcoming Happy Gilmore 2. Deadline is reporting that MJF is joining a cast that also includes Margaret Qualley, Travis Kelce, Bad Bunny, Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen, and Christopher McDonald. Production on the sequel is already underway.
Kyle Newacheck is directing the film with a script from Sandler and Tim Herlihy. Some of the producers include Jack Giarrapute, Robert Simonds, Dennis Dugan, Judit Maull, Kevin Grady, David Bausch, and Barry Bernardi.
The original film is a classic and a favorite among sports fans and Sandler fans alike. It tells the story of Happy, who is a hockey player who has to raise money to save his Grandma’s house from the bank foreclosing on the property. He learns that he’s quite good at driving the ball in golf, and makes the pro circuit. Along the way he gets help from retired golf pro Chubbs Peterson, played by the late Carl Weathers, and also runs into his antagonist, Shooter McGavin, a pro vying for the tour championship. The film was released by Universal Pictures and grossed over $82 million worldwide.
MJF has been quite busy in his acting career. He made his screen debut in The Iron Claw, and has filmed The Floaters with Seth Green, Stranglehold from Clark Duke, and now has Happy Gilmore 2 lined up.
It’s unknown what MJF’s role will be in the film.
Let’s hope that once he’s done filming, we can get him back on AEW television.
