3000 Pictures’ biopic about the Long Beach band Sublime is gaining significant momentum and attracting notable talent. According to sources speaking to Deadline, KJ Apa (One Fast Move) is set to portray Bradley Nowell in the film. Justin Chon director of Blue Bayou will take the helm. Chon is also co-writing the screenplay alongside Bobby Hundreds, building on an original draft by Chris Mundy.
Sublime is an American rock band formed in Long Beach, California, in 1988. The band is known for its unique blend of reggae, ska, punk rock, and hip-hop influences. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Bradley Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson, and drummer Bud Gaugh.
Sublime gained significant popularity in the 1990s with their self-titled album, released in 1996, which included hit songs like “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way.” The band’s music often features themes of love, life struggles, and the Southern California lifestyle. Tragically, Bradley Nowell passed away in 1996, shortly before the release of their self-titled album, which went on to achieve multi-platinum status.
Sources indicate that KJ Apa has dedicated nearly two years to pursuing the role of Nowell after learning about the project. After several meetings and submitting numerous self-tapes to demonstrate his commitment, producers, and executives recognized that he was the ideal fit for the role. An offer was made shortly after receiving approval from the estate.
KJ Apa is a New Zealand actor and musician, best known for his role as Archie Andrews on the popular television series Riverdale, which is based on the Archie Comics. In addition to his work on Riverdale, Apa has appeared in various films, including A Dog’s Purpose, The Last Summer, and I Still Believe. Beyond acting, KJ Apa is also a talented musician and has showcased his musical abilities in various projects.
While the film is currently in development, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready from Chernin Entertainment are producing the film. Also, original Sublime members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson are serving as executive producers, alongside Jakob Nowell—Nowell’s son and the current lead singer of Sublime—and Troy Nowell, representing the late singer’s estate. Francis Lawrence and Jamie Spetner, Director of Development at Chernin Entertainment, are also executive producing. Marisa Paiva is managing the project for 3000 Pictures.
