Robert Englund is a legend in the horror community. He’s played Freddy Krueger, been on V, and is just a massive presence wherever horror goes. He’s most known for A Nightmare On Elm Street, but he’s been in some stellar films outside of that series as well. Here’s his five best roles in horror movies that aren’t from A Nightmare On Elm Street.
5. Jackson Roth – Strangeland
The Dee Snider-written and starring horror film features Robert Englund playing a bit against type as Jackson Roth. Snider plays the convicted killer, Carlton Hendricks, who gets off for his crimes. Roth leads the charge of vigilantes against Hendricks, echoing the plot from A Nightmare On Elm Street. This one is a solid late-90s horror flick about an online predator who brings enlightenment through pain. If you’re a Twisted Sister fan, it connects to their music about Captain Howdy and it also has a kickass soundtrack.
4. Doc Halloran – Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Robert Englund played Doctor Loomis from Halloween? Well you get that same type of performance in Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. The somewhat meta slasher gives a documentary crew access to a slasher villain’s life. You see how they train to slay teenagers. It’s hilarious and refreshing to see that horror still has some ingenuity up its sleeve, mixing the mockumentary with slashers. Englund is fantastic here as the psychiatrist hell-bent on taking down Leslie Vernon.
3. Raymond Beaumont – Wishmaster
Wishmaster was The Expendables before that movie was even a thing, except with horror legends. Robert Englund’s role as Raymond Beaumont is more than just a cameo, though; he’s the driving force behind the plot in the film. His character, Raymond Beaumont, is the one that brings The Djinn’s final resting place out of storage and he also makes a wish to have a party that will be unforgettable that leads to the massacre in the film’s third act.
2. Erik Destler – The Phantom Of The Opera
The Phantom Of The Opera was billed as yet another “Freddy Krueger killer” in the late ’80s, but it takes a bit of a different tone than that film does. It’s still a horror flick, but it’s a more romantic-themed story that adapts Gaston Leroux’s novel. Englund plays the titular Phantom. He has a pretty similar look to Freddy with burns, boils, and other imperfections, but this is not the same performance as Krueger. This one splits between the “present” and a past life and is quite good. It has a “sequel” in Dance Macabre, which also stars Robert Englund.
1. Victor Creel – Stranger Things
Victor Creel might only be in one episode of Stranger Things with Robert Englund playing him, but he certainly makes an impression. The creepy “murderer” that’s in jail for the crimes his son committed, plays a pivotal role in letting everyone know just how evil Henry Creel is. This performance was easily the most creepy and standout from the most recent season of Stranger Things. Here’s hoping we can get him in some way for season five.
