The box office tracking for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was looking good and the movie was the number one movie this past weekend.
Go Ahead, Make My Box Office
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was tracking for a $95 million to $109 million opening which we knew would place it first. However, as per Box Office Mojo, the movie made $110 million. This exceeds the higher end of its tracked numbers and makes it the second-highest opening in September. The film was produced for $100 million so it’s already made back its production budget, and will likely recoup its marketing costs and then some in the weeks ahead.
The movie is a well-needed win for Warner Bros. Discovery which faltered this summer with some box office disappointments including Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1. The movie is expected to perform well for the month or so to come; however we do have Transformers One on the horizon which may challenge that, but time will tell.
The Rest Of The Box Office
Deadpool & Wolverine dropped from first to second, making $7.2 million. Reagan rose from 4th to 3rd with $5.2 million. Alien: Romulus dropped from 2nd to 4th with $3.9 million. Rounding out the top 5 was It Ends With Us which brought in $3.7 million.
The other new release this week, The Front Room, placed in a disappointing 10th place with $1.6 million at the box office. The movie was tracking for a $3 million to $5 million opening but low review scores and a low Cinema Score certainly kept the movie from reaching that tracked amount.
Next Weekend’s Predictions
The big releases next weekend are The Killer’s Game and Speak No Evil.
The Killer’s Game is looking to likely not make a big splash next weekend. It’s tracking for $5 million to $10 million but the movie has not been advertised well. It carries some star power with Dave Bautista, but that’s not necessarily enough. We saw with Lionsgate last year when The Expendables 4 debuted to $8 million and that had far more star power than this film. Lionsgate recently put more effort into promoting The Crow and even that landed at $4 million opening at the box office. This one is a bit hard to predict but I see it making somewhere in the $4 million to $6 million range. It’s really going to depend on audience reception and how well reviews are. Still, I don’t see this making a huge splash and it’ll likely place 3rd or 4th at the box office.
Speak No Evil has been promoted heavily, but is not an established IP nor is it coming from a well-known horror creator. We’ve seen a trend of horror movies from established directors doing better. Even Beetlejuice Beetlejuice despite not really being horror, carried itself on the Tim Burton brand so to speak. Speak No Evil doesn’t have that, but has some decent marketing behind it.
Speak No Evil is tracking for a $12 million to $20 million opening. I see it being closer to $12 million to $15 million and placing second. 2024 hasn’t been the kindest to Blumhouse with Night Swim, Imaginary, and Afraid all missing the mark. While James McAvoy does draw some box office prowess, he’s certainly not a strong enough draw on his own.
As always, we’ll find out next week.
