The Twilight animated series is officially moving forward at Netflix – though it may be a little different than fans originally expected. Apparently, the adaptation will actually focus on Stephenie Meyer’s 2020 novel Midnight Sun.

Midnight Sun is Meyer’s retelling of her original Twilight novel, but from the perspective of the vampire Edward Cullen, instead of the series’ human protagonist Bella Swan.

In addition to revealing the Midnight Sun news, Netflix announced Sinead Daly will helm the series as writer and executive producer. Daly’s previous credits include Tell Me Lies on Hulu,  Raised by Wolves on Max, The Walking Dead: World Beyond on AMC, and Netflix’s The Get Down

Meyer’s YA vampire romance series originally included four novels: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. These books were published between 2005 and 2008. Over a decade later, Meyer finally published the long-promised Midnight Sun in 2020.

Between the release of the original novels and Midnight Sun, the popular books were developed as a feature film franchise. The “Twilight Saga” included five films (one for each book, with the final novel split into two films), releasing between 2008 and 2012. The films starred Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as the leads in the human/vampire romance.

Meyer will also serve as an executive producer on the Netflix series, along with Meghan Hibbett for Fickle Fish Films. Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen also executive produce for Temple Hill Entertainment; Temple Hill previously produced the Twilight feature films. Finally, Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey EP for Picturestart. As previously announced, Lionsgate TV will produce the series.
