It was only a couple of weeks ago that we got news that Camila Mendes was set to star in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot/sequel. Now according to Deadline, the Riverdale actress won’t star in the film. The reason? Scheduling conflicts. Particularly with her starring role in the upcoming Masters Of The Universe film from Amazon MGM Studios. Mendes is starring in that film as Teela, a warrior and Captain of Eternia’s Royal Guard.
She was supposed to join Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King in I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are in talks to reprise their roles from the ’90s horror film. There’s no word on who will replace Mendes in her role. Jennifer Katyin Robinson is directing the film and wrote the script with Sam Lansky. Leah McKendrick was the first writer on the film. Neal Moritz, who was a producer on the original film, is producing this reboot.
What Is I Know What You Did Last Summer About?
I Know What You Did Last Summer has a current release date of July 18th, 2025. The first film grossed over $72 million at the box office in October 1997. The cast was filled with then-unknowns Love Hewitt, Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillipe, but each became sizeable stars after the film. It was a story about a friend group stalked by a villain with a hook after they tried to cover up hitting him with their car.
Kevin Williamson wrote the script for the original movie, which was based on a 1973 novel by Lois Duncan of the same name. This would be the fifth entry in the series after the original film, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, and the 2021 streaming series from Amazon.
It sure looks like they’re taking the same model used in Scream (2022) that brought back the legacy cast and mixed them up with a new crop of characters. Madelyn Cline stars in the Netflix series Outer Banks, and was in Rian Johnson’s smash hit Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
We’ll keep you updated on I Know What You Did Last Summer as we get more news about it.
