Another early 2000s teen drama may return to our screens soon. According to Deadline, the long-rumored continuation of One Tree Hill is now in the works at Netflix.
The original One Tree Hill series premiered in 2003 on The WB, and lasted for nine seasons (as well as through the network’s shift to The CW). The upcoming Netflix series is said to take place 20 years later, following best friends Brooke and Peyton from the original show as they navigate being parents to teens in a new era.
Original stars Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton are set to reprise their roles as Brooke and Peyton. Bush and Burton will both also executive produce the new series.
One Tree Hill was a teen drama set in a fictional North Carolina town. The story initially centered around the relationship between two half-brothers, Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty). As the series progressed and expanded, characters like Brooke and Peyton played more and more prominent roles.
Burton and Bush are the only cast members from the original series confirmed to return so far. However, Deadline suggests “informal conversations” with some of the other actors have taken place.
But we do know one thing for sure. Original series creator Mark Schwahn will definitely not be involved in the new series. Since One Tree Hill’s conclusion, a number of female cast and crew members, including Bush and Burton, have come forward about Schwahn’s sexual harassment during the series. Instead, Becky Hartman Edwards will helm the new project.
Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles also executive produce through their Chaos Machine banner. Danneel may also reprise her series role as Rachel Scott.
For now, that’s all we know about the One Tree Hill sequel series. But if this news leaves you feeling nostalgic, you can check out “Drama Queens,” the series rewatch podcast hosted by Burton and Bush. Both Max and Hulu currently have the entire series available to stream. Otherwise, check back to THS for more updates.
