Eternal Champions has had a very odd history for a video game. Sega originally released this fighting game for the Sega Genesis all the way back in 1993. Its goal? Apparently, to compete with Capcom’s Street Fighter and Midway’s Mortal Kombat. Sadly, judging by the lack of people who’ve heard of it, it didn’t work. Not for lack of trying though. The game spawned a single sequel in the form of Eternal Champions: Challenge From the Dark Side, and nearly spawned another before it got canceled. It did at least try to set itself apart from the other fighting games not just by developing from the ground up as a home console title, but also things like heavier emphasis on its story, characters pulled from different time periods, reflectable projectiles, etc..
Perhaps it’s that heavier emphasis on story that’s why Eternal Champions is getting a film adaptation. Don’t believe me? Then let’s find out more about this film adaptation together, shall we?
Eternal Champions Film Adaptation: Details
The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that a film adaptation for Eternal Champions has just got the greenlight. Alas, because it’s so new, we don’t have a lot of details about it so far. What we do know is this:
This Eternal Champions film will be a live-action one, with any CGI going unmentioned for now. Sega is partnering with Skydance Media to produce this film. Rob Ree is the one who brought this partnership together, as well as being the executive producer. Aimee Rivera will oversee this project for Skydance. Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) will be writing for this film for Skydance. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will be producing for Skydance, while Toru Nakahara will produce for Sega’s side of the partnership.
Alas, that’s all we have for now. Tune back in to THS to find out more about this Eternal Champions film adaptation when we do.
