The Poltergeist TV series at Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward. According to Variety, the series has landed the duo of Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. This is the first news in quite a while for series that was announced last October. There aren’t any plot details available, besides the fact that it’s based on the 1982 Tobe Hooper directed film.
Kalinda Vazquez has been quite busy in Hollywood and on comic pages with credits ranging from Star Trek: Discovery, Once Upon A Time, Fear The Walking Dead, and the comic book America Chavez: Made In The USA at Marvel. Thompson was made famous for writing and co-executive producing Supernatural. He also created and showran the prequel series The Winchesters at The CW. He’s also written comics for characters like Venom, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man.
Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television is on board to produce the series with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvery executive producing as part of Amblin. The original film was a brilliant mix of horror and ’80s family elements from co-writer Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper. It centered on the Freeling family, who move into a dream home in a lot, only to find out that it’s buried on ancient land and the spirits take their daughter into their world. They work with a parapsychologist and a spiritual medium to bring her back and escape.
Poltergeist spawned two sequels in 1986 and 1988, and a remake in 2015. The original is one of the best and most critically successful horror movies ever made. It was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Original Score.
We’ll have to see how the new series turns out on Amazon.
