Crystal Lake was/is one of the most anticipated projects for scary movie fans in recent memory. It sees the return of Jason Voorhees and the Friday the 13th franchise. It saw a bump in the road when A24 removed Bryan Fuller as showrunner in May. Now, the series has a new showrunner in Brad Caleb Kane. Kane will serve as series creator, writer, and executive producer, in addition to being a showrunner. The series is set to debut on Peacock.
The show was first announced in October 2022 and saw a major landmark in the history of Friday the 13th. It saw legal issues between VIctor Miller and Sean S. Cunningham get resolved slightly, enough to allow for the series to use Jason Voorhees and the rest of the series’ story. Victor Miller is also an Executive Producer on the series. It marks A24’s first foray into major IP-driven material.
Here’s what Kane had to say about his hiring.
“From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask. Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than Friday The 13th. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24.”
Who Is Brad Caleb Kane? And Will He Help Friday The 13th?
The Friday the 13th franchise is one of the most lengthy and storied horror series out there. There’s been 12 movies between Paramount and New Line Cinema. Sean S. Cunningham directed the first film and saw Pamela Voorhees take revenge on camp counselors for not paying attention to her son, Jason, while he was drowning. That first film had Pamela as the villain, but adult, zombie Jason was the villain for the rest of the franchise. It’s seen him go from Crystal Lake to Manhattan, to space, and even with a crossover with Freddy Krueger.
Brad Caleb Kane’s credits include IT: Welcome To Derry, which is releasing later this year on Max. He’s also served as an Executive Producer on shows like Tokyo Vice, Warrior, and written shows like Moonhaven, Lodge 49, Black Sails, and more.
We’ll have to see how he changes up the formula for Crystal Lake after the departure of Bryan Fuller.
Crystal Lake isn’t the only Friday the 13th TV show there’s been though. Back in the late ’80s and ’90s, there was a show called Friday the 13th. It didn’t have very much to do with Jason or the camp. but it took characters and had them going after cursed objects. Before it was canceled, there were plans to have one of the cursed objects be Jason’s famous hockey mask.
