Consumed is a new horror film delving deep into the chilling lore of the wendigo. This story follows Jay and Beth, a married couple whose spirits are lifted as they celebrate the remarkable news of Beth’s remission from cancer. In a heartfelt effort to reconnect and embrace life, they embark on a much-needed camping trip into the heart of the wilderness, hoping for a peaceful escape.

However, their idyllic getaway quickly transforms into a harrowing ordeal when they inadvertently cross paths with an eerie man lurking in the shadows of the woods. Their happy camping trip now finds them in the middle of a nightmarish blend of cannibalism, a crazy man in the woods, and a wendigo. I’m not going to lie. My memory of that particular folklore was limited to shows like Charmed and Supernatural. So, I had forgotten a lot of the nuances and learned a lot about possession and cannibalism.

‘Consumed’ Makes A Meal Out Of Horror

Consumed begins with Mark Famiglietti (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines) and Courtney Halverson (Unfriended) immersed in a forest setting. The duo has great chemistry that helps draw in the viewer. Devon Sawa (Chucky) makes an almost unrecognizable appearance. However, his portrayal of the deranged man in the woods is fantastic. He draws the viewer deeper into the intriguing lore of the wendigo without it feeling like pure exposition.

The story kicks off at a breakneck pace, maintaining its momentum as the mystery and suspense intensify, alongside a growing pile of half-eaten bodies. That is until we reach the “big reveal moment,” where the creature from this creature feature disappointingly underwhelms.

It’s reminiscent of enjoying a fantastic meal only to be let down by a lackluster dessert—it’s tough to bounce back from that. Nonetheless, I would still recommend watching Consumed when it releases on August 16th. It offers an exciting experience through the apps and entrees… just consider skipping the dessert.

Consumed releases in select theaters and on demand August 16.
