Ghostbusters is heading to the biggest streamer out there. According to Variety, Netflix has greenlit a new Ghostbusters animated series from Elliott Kalan. Kalan has joined the project as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. A Ghostbusters animated series has been in development since at least 2022, but this is the first confirmation of it. There are no plot details or setting at the moment, but Variety is reporting that the 3D animated series will be tonally in line with the recent Ghostbusters films, Afterlife and Frozen Empire.
The series comes from Sony Pictures Animation and Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps Inc onboard as executive producers. Reitman and Kenan wrote both Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire with Reitman directing the first film and handing it off to Kenan to direct the second.
Elliott Kalan comes from work on The Daily Show as the head writer. During his tenure on that show, he and the team received seven consecutive Emmy nominations for best writing for a variety series, winning four. Kalan was also the head writer for Netflix’s revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
This would be the third animated Ghostbusters series after The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters. The first series focused on the original Ghostbusters and the second focused on a new cast of characters led by Egon Spengler. The new Ghostbusters films both felt like they were a bit of extensions of Extreme Ghostbusters, especially Frozen Empire.
We’ll have to see how the animated series turns out on Netflix.
