Here’s what his management had to say in a statement to Variety.
“Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and client on many years who will be dearly missed.”
Cyphers played Sheriff Brackett in both Halloween and Halloween II and recently reprised his role in Halloween Kills.
“So sorry to hear about dear Chuck,” said Nancy Kyes, his on-screen daughter in Halloween. “My friend of many years, he could always be relied on for a kind word, a good laugh and a great story. How he will be missed.”
Halloween wasn’t the only film that Cyphers worked on with John Carpenter though. He was in regular rotation for the acclaimed director in The Fog, Escape From New York. and Someone’s Watching Me!. He also starred in TV shows like Charlie’s Angels, Wonder Woman, Starsky & Hutch, The Dukes of Hazzard.
His most famous role as Sheriff Brackett helps tie together Halloween. Without his everyman, smalltown sheriff-vibes to push against Doctor Loomis’s more clinical tactics. He captured that performance perfectly, aiding the most famous slasher film ever. Charles Cyphers was more than just one performance; his most famous is incredibly important.
