Hey everybody, have you heard the news? Joe Bob is back in town. This week, Joe Bob and Darcy gave us what many consider to be a Grindhouse and Drive-In classic. The movie shown was Death Game.
If you’re unfamiliar, every second week on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. The former Monstervision host and his co-host Darcy The Mail Girl feature a movie; that sometimes has a timely theme (although, it’s not always necessary).
It’s also worth noting that Shudder announced that the season will end with a dusk-to-dawn six-movie marathon. So stock up on coffee and be ready for a fun time on August 30th. Also, pray for this reviewer’s sleep schedule. I’ll need it.
Playing The Death Game
Once again, it’s great to see guests on this show! The movie was Death Game and Joe Bob and Darcy brought on one of the stars, Colleen Camp.
Colleen was great and provided great insight into the movie. I’ll always say that while The Last Drive-In doesn’t always show traditionally good or great movies. It’s about highlighting the work that goes into these movies and you’ll always walk away with a deeper appreciation of these movies and that was no different with Death Game.
The movie itself is a classic of grindhouse and drive-in cinema and many Mutants were excited to see that it was being shown. It certainly gets very weird in spots and there are certainly a lot of repeated songs (I’m looking at you “Dear Old Dad”) that certainly wear out their welcome. Still, it’s a fun movie and keeping with the The Last Drive-In tradition.
II’m not sure I’d suggest this as a top-recommended episode of the series, even if the movie is considered a classic by many. It’s certainly going to be for those who’ve seen other episodes of The Last Drive-In and are looking for more of a deep cut. Still, it’s certainly worth your time.
The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs airs live on Shudder every second Friday at 6pm PST / 9pm EST. If you miss the live airing, episodes are archived and posted the following Sunday.
