The 2024 Olympic Games have started and why not celebrate this event with The Smurfs? To celebrate this year’s Olympics PAPERCUTZ has released THE SMURFS: OLYMPIC SPECIAL. This one-shot release of the classic story from 1979 was created by Yvan Delporte and Peyo. This one-shot story is available now at PAPERCUTZ.com and local comic shops.

Papercutz is celebrating the XXXIII Olympiad with The Smurf Olympics! Hefty Smurf loves to play sports, but he can’t get the other Smurfs to play with him. His solution? Create the “Smurf Olympics”! The Smurfs divide themselves into two teams, all competing for the grand prize: a kiss from the Smurfette. But when one Smurf is turned down by both teams, he decides to compete on his own, throwing the games into chaos! Can one Smurf take on the whole village? If you are a fan of the classic THE SMURFS stories then you are going to love THE SMURFS: OLYMPIC SPECIAL. This story takes us to Smurf Village where Hefty Smurf is tired of competing with himself and decides to make his own Smurf Olympics to have some smurfing challenges. But as most know not every Smurf is alike and getting these games off without a hitch is going to be a problem. Now this isn’t going to be the only problem to arise as Wimpy Smurf who wants to compete isn’t selected by any team. Can Wimpy find a way to compete and can the Smurfs Olympics go on without any issues you will have to read to find out.

While the story is a classic fun Smurf tale, the art and lettering help things flow. The pages are colorful and easy to follow. Also, the lettering in the comice helps keep things flowing as well. The text is easy to read and changes with the mood and sound lettering add more to the story. Everything was done well to keep that classic THE SMURFS story and look. While the lettering was one of the strengths it also was one of the challenges for this comic as well. There are sometimes too many words in a panel and it takes away from the art and the story. But the good thing is it is not enough to make you want to put the comic down.

My Final Thoughts

If you are a THE SMURFS fan this is a must-read and have in your smurfing collection. From the classic storing telling to the overall message THE SMURFS: OLYMPIC SPECIAL is a fun read for you and anyone else. The best part of this one-shot is how the classic story and look were preserved and for me who grew up with THE SMURFS, I enjoyed that. Overall I give this comic book an 8 out of 10.
