The Dark Knight has returned! This time in a new animated series, BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER, created by J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm. Starring Hamish Linklater (Batman), Minnie Driver, Christina Ricci (Catwoman), and Jamie Chung (Harly Quinn); BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER takes you to the 1940s to a Gotham that is ran by villains who have many officers on the take. Could this series be the next best thing since the BATMAN: The Animated Series? This first series of this series is available now on Prime Video.

Batman: Caped Crusader

Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear. Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human—the BATMAN. His one-man crusade attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications.

Batman: Caped Crusader – Review

Many Batman fans including myself claim that the original Batman: The Animated Series is the best animated Batman series out there. With voices from the late Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and many more iconic voices, and great storytelling you can see why fans put it at number one. So when I saw the announcement about the Batman: Caped Crusader series heading our way, I was unsure what to expect.

This 10-part series takes you back to the 1940s into a noir time when Batman was just getting started and the criminals were carrying Tommy guns and were ready to fight. We are also back to a time where Batman’s techniques are frowned upon by Jim Gordon and DA Harvey Dent. But as we see the tensions rise between Batman and the police each episode gives a new story with each villain as they are introduced. Also, when it comes to the villains in this series, you will notice some have changed and seem more evil than ever before. And when I say “more evil” I mean it, not even the villains’ kids are safe from them. Ill just leave it at that so I don’t spoil anything for you.

What I like most about this series is how each episode is like a stand-alone story. Yes, we have a story arc involving Batman, but with each episode focusing on a different villain we get a character story at a good pace. This is so much better than a bunch introduced at once and everything is rushed.

The Creative Team And Cast

J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm gave us an amazing storyline that didn’t get old. The pace for each episode was perfect and the story arcs were flawless. The dark and noir-themed series gives us a more adult feel that makes us hold on to every moment. This creative team’s new and dark take on Batman paid off.

The cast of BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER is perfect for this series. Hamish Linklater knocks it out of Gotham Stadium as the voice of Batman. Minnie Driver, Christina Ricci (Catwoman), Eric Morgan Stuart (Commissioner Gorden), Krystal Joy Brown (Barbara Gordon) Jamie Chung (Harly Quinn), and Jason Watkins (Alfred) balance out the story perfectly. I hope this team stays on for more seasons in the future.

My Final Thoughts

If you are or are not a Batman fan, BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER is a must-watch! This new and dark storyline is action-packed and the animation looks amazing. It is not the same old Batman story and that’s what I love the most about it. J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm filled the void the BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES left when it ended. This new series is what we needed at a low point in the DC storytelling world. Is this series as good as BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES? No, it is not, but damn it is close. I give BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER a 9 out of 10. I can not wait for season 2!
