Spy x Family Ch. 100 / Mission 100 not only marks the 100th chapter of the manga, but also the next part of Henry and Martha’s story. This time though, it’s focusing on Martha and how she survived the destruction of her unit. Needless to say, this is probably the most bloody and violent chapter of the entire manga thus far.
Spy x Family Ch. 100 / Mission 100: Details
Spy x Family Ch. 100 (known officially as Mission 100) is the latest chapter (as of writing these reviews) of the action spy comedy manga by Tatsuya Endo (Blade of the Moon Princess, TISTA). In fact, this chapter actually continues the story of the previous chapter and is Pt. 3 of this story arc. You can read my reviews of Pt. 1, Pt. 2, and Pt. 3 here.
Casey Loe returns as the translator for Spy x Family Ch. 100, with Rina Mapa returning as the letterer. Shueisha originally published this manga in Japan under their Jump Comics+ imprint in the magazine Shōnen Jump+. Viz Media is the company publishing this manga in English in the NA region.
When and Where to Read
Spy x Family Ch. 100 made its online debut on June 23, 2024. You can read this chapter entirely for free on Shonen Jump on Viz Media. Ch. 100 will remain free for two chapter releases after it. Upon the release of the third chapter after it, Ch. 100 will go into the Shonen Jump vault. Once there, you will have to pay a subscription fee to read it and all previous chapters. Admittedly, the fee is only $2.99 per month, so it’s not that big a hit to your wallet. All the same, if you’re short on cash, then you might want to hurry up and read Ch. 100 for free before you can’t anymore.
Anime Adaptation Details
As a side note: Spy x Family now has an anime adaptation that premiered on April 9, 2022. In fact, season 2 just recently premiered on October 7, 2023, and even more recently ended on December 23, 2023. There was even an anime film spinoff called Spy x Family Code: White that premiered in Japan December 22, 2023; and will finally make its NA debut on April 19, 2024. You can watch all episodes on either Crunchyroll or Hulu. Note, though, that only Crunchyroll has any of the dubs. So if you like watching the English dub for some reason, then you have to watch the anime on Crunchyroll. If you want to purchase tickets for that Spy x Family Code: White anime film though, then you can do so from its official website.
Spy x Family Ch. 100 / Mission 100: Plot Summary
Spy x Family Ch. 100 doesn’t quite pick up where we last left off in the previous chapter. Instead, it rewinds time just a bit and switches perspectives from Henry to Martha in order to allow us to see what she has been up to. And oh boy, she’s been up to a lot. A lot more than anyone else ever should be up to. What else do you call it when she’s the sole survivor of her position after a tank-fired HE shell rips through it, and then watches in horror as one of her comrades is executed for panicking? Alas, the horror gets even worse when her unit retreats, but she’s unable to keep up due to a leg injury. The same leg injury results in her being caught by Westalis soldiers, who shoot her and cause her to fall into a river.
Martha then wakes up in the house of an old Westalis woman living with her dog. This woman treats Martha’s injuries, hides her from the locals, and even packs rations and a map for her when she sneaks out in the middle of the night. All with “Go home” scrawled in the corner of the map, moving Martha to tears in the process. Will she make it back to Ostania? Well, that’s what we’ll find out in the next chapter of Spy x Family.
Spy x Family Ch. 100 / Mission 100: The Good
Okay, there’s seriously no doubt about it. The story of Spy x Family Ch. 100 just blew me away, almost literally. The story of this chapter strongly reminds me of This War of Mine in just how brutally war is depicted. Seriously, Tatsuya Endo does not hold back on the violence. It’s part of a trend of him depicting war as something brutal and disturbing, and I’m loving it.
All with Endo’s artwork complementing that story. Normally, he does a lot of silly art for his manga due to how lighthearted it is. Not in these times though. Now his excellent art skills is being used to depict some rather horrific and gruesome stuff, showing just how skilled of a mangaka he is. It’s that combination of brutal story and horrific artwork that’s what makes these war arcs of Spy x Family some of the best arcs of the manga overall. On par with Loid’s backstory arc, really.
Spy x Family Ch. 100 / Mission 100: The Bad
If you’re looking for high-intensity action, then…actually, this might still be your thing. There is some very intense military action in Spy x Family Ch. 100. However, it’s all played for tragedy rather than any excitement. If you want that, then might I suggest Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, Kaiju No. 8, and/or The Elusive Samurai? Those might be the right kind of action scenes for you.
