Author Michael Connelly is no stranger to success when it comes to adapting his written works to other media. Following the success of such hits as The Lincoln Lawyer and Bosch, Connelly is now making the jump directly to audio drama with The Safe Man. Telling a “ghost story” Connelly wrote approximately 15 years year ago, the Audible Original aims to entertain in a very different way. We learned all about it today at Comic-Con International (SDCC 2024).

Starring Jack Quaid (The Boys) and Titus Welliver (Bosh), The Safe Man follows Brian Holloway (Quaid) as he’s hired to crack an antique safe. Welliver plays Paul Robinette, the famous horror author who hires Holloway. “Opening that safe door unleased something sinister. Something that continued to haunt [Brian]. But what exactly? And can whatever slipped through that threshold be stopped?”

Connelly informed us that it was his daughter, the effort’s producer, that suggested The Safe Man as her father’s next adaptation. This process, however, differed significantly from his previous endeavors. “There was something very quick about this process… it was about nine months. The speed of being able to do this kind of storytelling was very attractive,” said Connelly. In fact, he revealed, the most difficult aspect of the production was obtaining the rights to use Doris Day’s song ‘Que Sera, Sera’ in the production.

Quaid, when asked how he translates his physical and facial expressiveness on film to an audio-only format for The Safe Man, explained that the process by which they recorded greatly helped:

“Even though it’s pure audio, physicality does help. There’s [scenes] with me running through hallways…. They put a mic on me and set me loose running through the hallways of the studio. It was so cool.  Was it the best audio quality? No, but it sounds authentically like the characters in the moment.”

In The Safe Man, “Brian begins to realize that he is inexplicably linked to the eternal… And that he must defy fate if he has any chance of saving the most important person in his life.” Will he be successful? Listen to the Audible Original to find out.
