Whovians flocked to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con to see the first SDCC appearance of the latest Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa. Gatwa took the stage alongside Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday) and showrunner Russell T. Davies for a Doctor Who panel at the con.
During the panel, Davies confirmed plans for a new Doctor Who spinoff. The series is called The War Between The Land And The Sea, and it will feature an alien species familiar to fans: the Sea Devils.
Here’s the official synopsis for the series:
When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.
During the panel, Davies also officially revealed key casting for the show. The five-part series will feature Russell Tovey (Feud, American Horror Story: NYC) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Surface, Loki), In addition to Tovey and Mbatha-Raw’s new roles, Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient will reprise their roles as Kate Stewart and Colonel Ibrahim.
“I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast. And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Whoniverse to its foundations. When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble,” Davies said.
The Sea Devils were first introduced in a 1972 serial, with John Pertwee playing the Doctor. The creatures made a return recently during Jodie Whittaker’s run on the show.
The War Between The Land And The Sea comes from showrunner and executive producer Davies, who wrote the spinoff with Pete McTighe (Doctor Who, A Discovery of Witches). Filming on the series begins in August.
