It was a pretty large shock to the system when it was announced that a sequel to This Is Spinal Tap was coming. Let alone with the original cast, original director, and no mention of any sort of legacy sequel shenanigans. In a new interview with Deadline, Rob Reiner shared an update on the progress for the sequel to the greatest mockumentary ever made.

“It’s going good. Our first screening for our family and friends will be probably in August, and then sometime in September we’ll start showing it to distributors, and we’re hoping to have it out sometime late spring or early summer of next year.”

The new update from Reiner places the film in the Spring/Summer 2025 timeslot for a release.

The original film came out in 1984 and since then we’ve had plenty of rock stars come and go. The new film will have cameo appearances from the likes of Lars Ulrich, Chad Smith, Paul McCartney, Elton John, and more.

“We got everybody together and we added a couple of surprise guests. We have Paul McCartney and Elton John and Garth Brooks. It’s fun.”

Are They Getting The Old Band Back Together?

Reiner returns to write and direct the film with the original stars/writers Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, reprising their roles as Nigel Tufnel, David St Hubbins, and Derek Smalls, respectively. Reiner will also star as the documentarian within the film Martin “Marty” DiBergi.

Also returning is Fran Drescher, who will reprise her role as the band’s publicist, Bobbi Flekman, from the original 1984 movie. As for newcomers, Spinal Tap 2 will feature John Michael Higgins, Jason Acuña, Don Lake, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman, Chris Addison, Brad Williams, and musician Paul Shaffer.

Here’s the premise for the new movie, according to Rob Reiner.

“They’ve played Albert Hall, played Wembley Stadium, all over the country and in Europe. They haven’t spent any time together recently. The idea was that Ian Faith, who was their manager, he passed away. In reality, Tony Hendra passed away. Ian’s widow inherited a contract that said SPINAL TAP owed them one more concert. She was basically going to sue them if they didn’t. All these years and a lot of bad blood we’ll get into and they’re thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert.”
