This weekend once again belonged to the Minions as Despicable Me 4 stayed in the number one spot at the box office; despite competition from Longlegs.
Long Legs For Despicable Me 4
As per Box Office Mojo, Despicable Me 4 maintained the first-place spot with $44.7 million. This was a 40.5% drop from last weekend but despite the drop off the film still maintained a healthy lead. The movie had a small expansion into more theatres, and aside from Inside Out 2 there isn’t a whole lot of family-friendly fare which made the movie an easy choice for families.
Longlegs debuted in second with $22.6 million. While the movie had no tracking in the pre-release period. Most Neon distributed movies average a $5 million to $10 million opening weekend. So while a $22 million opening is not entirely uncommon for a lot of movies, it’s certainly a huge opening for a Neon distributed movie and for Osgood Perkins. Whose last movie, Gretel & Hansel made $6.1 million on its opening weekend. Certainly an effective marketing campaign and good early buzz for the movie was effective in rallying horror fans to the box office.
The Rest Of The Box Office
Inside Out 2 dropped from second to third with $20.7 million. A Quiet Place: Day One dropped from third to fourth with $11.8 million.
The other new release this week was Fly Me to the Moon. The Greg Berlanti-directed movie starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum made $9.4 million. The movie has been getting average reviews, and the movie mostly targets the 55+ crowd. That demographic tends to value review scores more, which certainly didn’t help the movie. While the movie has a $100 million budget, it looks woefully short of being considered profitable. It is also an Apple Original film. Apple has often said that despite apparent box office failings, their movies are considered profitable. So it’s unknown how much of the movie’s revenue is subsidized by Apple, their subscribers, and any licensing fees attributed to product placement. So it’ll be hard to know in truth if the movie is truly profitable or not. However, I would simply say a $10 million opening for an Apple production on a $100 million budget may not be as doom and gloom as it may appear.
Twisters Set To Touch Down Next Weekend
Next weekend sees the release of Twisters. The movie is tracking for a $40 million to $55 million opening which will no doubt put it in first assuming Despicable Me 4 drops anywhere from 35-40% next weekend. On a $200 million budget that may seem like a strong start. However, with Deadpool & Wolverine nipping at the heels with a release a week later. The movie won’t have a large window of opportunity before the Marvel behemoth drops down.
As always, we’ll find out next week!
