The historical epic Horizon: An American Saga released in theaters last month and was supposed to have a part two release on August 16th, but now the release has been shelved indefinitely. Kevin Costner’s Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema made the decision to change up the ambitious plan to release the films back-to-back within months of each other in hopes that the first film finds a bigger audience. The first film cost upwards of $100 million to produce.

Chapter 1 of the western saga will debut at home on VOD and rental services on July 16th, while still being available to watch in theaters. Here’s what New Line Cinema had to say about the move.

“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks, including on PVOD and MAX.  We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the US discover the film in its theatrical run,”

Here’s what Territory Pictures had to say about the change in release.

“The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2, has been incredibly gratifying.  Kevin made this film for people who love movies and who wanted to go on a journey. The support that we have received from film fans, and the theater owners, as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to reinforce our belief in them and the films that we have made, and we thank them for coming on board for the ride. We welcome the opportunity for that window to be expanded as we know it will only serve to enhance the experience of seeing Horizon 2.”

Horizon is a passion project for Kevin Costner, who put $38 million of his own money into Chapter 1 and funded the second part with mystery investors and selling off the foreign rights to the film. Costner also put up an undisclosed amount for marketing the film.

Costner has plans for four films in his Horizon saga with part 3 filming this August.

There’s no word on when Horizon Part 2 will release in theaters.
