Unsinkable is an 11-part audio movie that will premiere exclusively on Amazon’s Wondery+ on July 10. The series will premiere with two episodes, and additional episodes released weekly.
So, Unsinkable is based on the true story of the British tanker, the San Demetrio. It’s a story of heroism, fortitude, and seamanship during World 2. When the ship is attacked by Nazis thousands of miles from home, a young officer and a handful of desperate seamen fight to survive against the elements and themselves.
This audio movie is presented in Dolby Atmos and features the voices of Brian Cox, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Nathalie Emmanuel, John Malkovich, Harry Hamlin, Blair Redwood, Paul Telfer, as well as others.
SPEAKING WITH THE CREATORS
So, with the release of Unsinkable on Wondery+, I spoke with Misha Crosby and John Mawson. They are the creators, directors, and showrunners of the series, as well as voice actors for some of the characters. During our conversation, they explain what exactly is an audio movie, and how it differs from a radio-play, or an audiobook. They also share some challenges in setting some action sequences without visual help. It’s a great conversation that you can check out below.
WHAT IS AN AUDIO MOVIE?
So, an Audio Movie is described as a “movie for the ears”. This means there is no narration and is presented through the lens of the characters. So, Audio movies embrace the production style and values of cinematic feature films. This is accomplished by creating an immersive narrative experience through sound design as well as an original orchestra score. In the case of Unsinkable, the sound design is led by Jimmy Boyle and his team, and mixed by Academy Award winner Ben Wilkins.
