Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF Ep. 13 “Supper of Three and Afternoon of Two” features a very rare occasion for our duo. That occasion being one where Holo gets sick for the first time. It may not be the last one either, but at least this gives the story an excuse to have a fun day off from the economic thriller.

Alas, it will take a bit before Holo is able to stand like that.

Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF Ep. 13 “Supper of Three and Afternoon of Two” is the 13th episode (you can check out my reviews for Ep. 1Ep. 2Ep. 3Ep. 4Ep. 5Ep. 6Ep. 7Ep. 8Ep. 9Ep. 10Ep. 11, and Ep. 12 here) season 1 (which hopefully won’t be the only one) of this economic fantasy reboot anime series by studio Passione (CitrusMieruko-chanYuri Is My Job!). Said anime series is the reboot of the 2008 anime Spice and Wolf by studios Imagin (season 1) and the duo of Brain’s Base and Marvy Jack (season 2). Said original anime series (along with this reboot) are the anime adaptations of the light novel series of the same name by Isuna Hasekura (World End EconomicaMagdala de Nemure). Crunchyroll is the company licensing this anime for its NA release.

Ikebata Takashi and Kitamura Mitsuki both co-directed Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF Ep. 13 “Supper of Three and Afternoon of Two”, with Kizawa Yukito as the writer, and Masae Nakayama and Takeo Takahashi doing the storyboard. As for the Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF anime as a whole, we do still know that Hijiri Sanpei is the director. Takeo Takahashi is actually returning from the original 2008 anime series as the chief director. Tatsuhiko Urahata is the overall writer, with Kevin Penkin (Made in AbyssTower of GodBye Bye, Earth) as the composer for the music you hear in this reboot anime.

Speaking of music: the opening theme music for this reboot anime is “Tabi no Yukue” by Hana Hope. Meanwhile,  “Andante” by ClariS is the ending theme music for the same.

Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF Ep. 13 “Supper of Three and Afternoon of Two”: Synopsis

At the very least, Holo gets a day off to be herself here.

Alas, Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF is an ongoing anime series. In fact, Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF Ep. 13 “Supper of Three and Afternoon of Two” only just made its debut a week ago as of this writing. Thus, you will all get the official synopsis from Crunchyroll instead of a spoiler-filled plot summary. You can read that synopsis below:

Holo, Lawrence, and Nora sit down for a much deserved meal, but Holo’s not her usual self. Holo remembers the past and contemplates the future…

And thus, our heroes part ways for now, but at least Jū Ayakura gives them a nice send-off.

Once more, it’s the story of Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF Ep. 13 “Supper of Three and Afternoon of Two” that’s the best part about it. All thanks to Isuna Hasekura, too, since he wrote the original light novels. In fact, the plot of this entire episode comes from an OVA from the original second season of the anime that you may or may not have seen because it was left out of the original broadcast. It’s a shame, too, because this episode features some fascinating details. Without going into spoilers, Holo gets sick, and Lawrence tries to treat her. Using period-accurate medieval medicine, of all things. I mean it. Kraft even uses humorism in his layman’s medical diagnosis and to determine how to treat Holo’s illness. It’s a fascinating process that’s a nice treat for medieval medicine fans.

Of course, it’s also fun seeing Holo and Kraft dance their dance of romance with each other. Especially when Kraft has no idea he’s dancing, which you can tell when he brings Nora to visit Holo. That part is definitely what makes the story fun.

And honestly, the animation definitely complements the story here. I mean it. Passione practically poured their heart and soul into this episode. This is especially true of the moments where Holo reminisces on her past. The artwork suddenly shifts into something that looks like the illuminated manuscripts from medieval times but is in motion. It all adds to the sense that the entire anime is a medieval fantasy that comes to life as an anime.

Holo sad at hearing about people who don’t like her story.

Honestly, this is definitely not the episode for any action junkies out there. In fact, Spice and Wolf: MERCHANT MEETS THE WISE WOLF Ep. 13 “Supper of Three and Afternoon of Two” has no action in it whatsoever. If you want that, then you might want to check out Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Solo Leveling, and/or Kaiju No. 8. Those have more than enough action in them to satisfy any junkie.
